This course on Advanced Diagnosis will cover data in clinical research studies for major diagnoses in psychiatry. Clinical research will be examined in both children and adults. DSM and non-DSM approaches to diagnosis and treatment will be explored, and evidence for and against different approaches will be provided using scientific clinical research studies. All discussion will be evidence-based, with direct relation to scientifically sound clinical research studies. Conceptual and historical aspects of psychiatric diagnoses and psychopathology also will be analyzed.

The practice gap that is being addressed is that psychiatric practitioners often do not have extensive knowledge about the scientific or conceptual basis of the most common psychiatric diagnoses. This limited knowledge leads to notable misdiagnosis rates or to misuse of diagnoses. Further clinicians use the DSM system uncritically, and often are unable to think about psychopathology based on the scientific literature primarily, whether or not it correlates with DSM constructs.

The learning objectives are:

  1. To analyze the conceptual assumptions and empirical data underlying major psychiatric diagnoses
  2. To identify and understand the research evidence for and against DSM and non-DSM concepts of psychopathology
  3. To apply the broader knowledge provided in the course to decision-making in clinical practice

Lectures, each about 60 minutes in duration:

  1. Origins and sources of DSM-III to 5
  2. Depressive conditions
  3. Bipolar illness
  4. Schizophrenia and schizoaffective illness
  5. Anxiety states
  6. Attention deficit disorder
  7. Psychopathology: Basic and advanced concepts
  8. Psychopathology Basic and advanced concepts

What our customer think about us

I use and reference your books with patients and students frequently. I really look forward to the classes and have been grateful for the impact you’ve had on my thinking and my practice with patients.

Your courses are a true gift. The published and validated information in his courses is sorely lacking in many, if not most, CME courses in our field. The breadth of his knowledge across many disciplines is prodigious.

Learning from Dr. Ghaemi’s work has had a profound, positive impact in how I treat and teach about psychiatric care. I also can’t recommend his webinar courses strongly enough. Not to sound too hokey but his work has revitalized my love for the subject of psychopharmacology!
RD

This is an invaluable resource for psychiatric -mental health clinicians, medicine, nursing and allied health and also for those who endure a difficult life bereft of your wisdom and knowledge. Your dedication to the health and welfare of patients and clinicians is laudable.

Finally, someone is thinking outside of the DSM.

I used your textbook for our Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner students last summer for their Psychopharmacology course. They really enjoyed your book and found the material accessible and relatable.
