The Truth About SRIs: A Clinical Reality Check

Free Live Masterclass with Dr. Nassir Ghaemi

Coming Live to YouTube in Early February 2026.
Antidepressants are the most prescribed drugs in psychiatry, yet the standard guidelines ignore the pharmacology. Join Dr. Ghaemi as he dismantles the "Selective" myth and presents the long-term data regarding efficacy, safety, and withdrawal.

Why "SSRI" is a misnomer

We will review the transporter binding data that proves these drugs are not selective. You will learn:

  • Why the marketing term "SSRI" conceals the dirty pharmacology of drugs like Paroxetine and Sertraline.
  • Symptomatic vs. Disease Modifying: Why SRIs work like "psychiatric aspirin" (short-term relief) rather than "psychiatric penicillin" (course alteration).
  • The failure of SRIs in Bipolar Depression and the risks of destabilization in mixed states.

Long-term Harms & The Withdrawal Protocol

Most clinicians know how to start these drugs; few know how to stop them safely. We will cover:

  • The Hidden Risks: Osteoporosis, fracture risks in the elderly, and the reality of persistent sexual dysfunction.
  • Stopping the Drug: Why 1-5% withdrawal rates are a statistical lie, and why the "taper" usually fails.
  • The Solution: Dr. Ghaemi’s specific "Fluoxetine Cross-Taper" protocol to manage severe withdrawal symptoms effectively.
